When - January 2025
DB Santasalo recently carried out precision line boring machining in Albi, France, at an external workshop. The project involved reboring an industrial gearbox for a feed screw to restore its proper functionality. The original bores were out of tolerance, necessitating precision machining and the installation of new bushings to bring them back within specification.
Solution
To ensure a precise and stable machining process, thorough measurements were conducted before, during, and after reboring. The MPB60 line boring machine was mounted with three support bearings to maximise stability and minimise vibrations. The new bushings were carefully selected and machined to achieve an optimal fit within H6 tolerances. The MPB60 enabled precise and effective machining, minimsing downtime and production losses. The operator utilised dual cutting steels on the tool post and maintained speeds of 250+ RPMs, resulting in faster and more precise machining outcomes.
The process involved:
Reboring and fitting two 368 mm bushings, which were pre-shrunk by 0.03 mm before installation. The final bore dimension was 360 mm, achieving a H6 tolerance.
Reboring and fitting one 268 mm bushing, pre-shrunk by 0.03 mm before installation. The final bore dimension was 260 mm, achieving an H6 tolerance.
This precision machining restored the gearbox bores to the required tolerances, ensuring reliable operation and extended service life for the feed screw mechanism. DB Santasalo's expertise in high-precision boring and bushing installation guaranteed a successful outcome within strict tolerances.
